The Regional Review for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was held from 26 to 28 April 2021, co-organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in its capacity as Coordinator of the United Nations Network on Migration, and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
During the meeting, representatives of the Latin American and Caribbean countries reiterated their commitment to the implementation of the Global Compact on Migration and called for viewing migration as a contribution to democracy, diversity, and sustainable development, respecting, protecting and ensuring migrants’ rights and supporting them in vulnerable situations.
Government representatives also committed to implementing the Global Compact on Migration and ensuring that migration is a choice rather than an obligation.
