Our WorkAs the leading inter-governmental organization promoting humane and orderly migration, IOM plays a key role to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through different areas of intervention that connect both humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. Across South America, IOM provides a comprehensive response to the humanitarian needs of migrants, internally displaced persons, returnees and host communities.

IOM’s Regional Office (RO) for South America was established in July 2011 and is located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It previously served as a Mission with Regional Functions for the Southern Cone.
The RO in Buenos Aires supports and guides the activities implemented by OIM country offices in the region. In addition, through its various country offices in South America, it supports governments in the development of their policies and other migration-related areas in response to migrants’ needs.
The work of the RO is divided into different units: Resource Management; Regional Thematic Specialists; Project Support Unit; Project Development and Donor Relations; Policy and Institutional Relations; and Media and Communication.
The group of Regional Thematic Specialists include:

- Migration and climate change
- Immigration and border management
